The crumbling Atlantic Wall through the astonished eyes of photographer Stephan Vanfleteren: reissue in a bilingual edition French-English
During World War II, Adolf Hitler ordered the construction of a defensive line along the coasts of the Western Front. From the French-Spanish border to northern Norway, this Atlantic Wall forms a series of bunkers, barriers and coastal batteries.
Over the past year, Stephan Vanfleteren has photographed this 2,600-kilometre-long 'wall' in his signature black-and-white style. He set up his tripod on the beaches of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, climbed the cliffs of France, sailed between the fjords of Norway and stood in the surf of Denmark to photograph the remains of the largest military structure of the last century.
With this photo series, Vanfleteren shows his amazement at the unwanted architectural beauty of these concrete structures and reflects on the power of nature, which is slowly bringing this previously impenetrable structure to its knees.
