About Claudia Jaguaribe

Claudia Jaguaribe (1955, Brazil) is a Brazilian visual artist and publisher who lives and works between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. She graduated from Boston University with a degree in fine arts, photography and art history. She is represented by Hangar Gallery.

Photographic approach of Claudia Jaguaribe

Claudia Jaguaribe's work focuses on urban landscapes, the environment and, above all, the representation of reality as a “conceptual record”. By blending reality and subjectivity, she stimulates perception of what we see and feel, creating many layers of understanding and narrative. The materiality of her work challenges the very nature of photography. She expands traditional photographic formats, transforms images into “photosculptures”, integrates video and uses artificial intelligence in her work.

The images resulting from artificial intelligence are evidence of an elsewhere. An elsewhere that doesn't exist, that we can't see, experience, smell or feel, but which takes shape in the history and traditional codes of the landscape. Nature is strange, unknown, yet so familiar. The codes by which we represent nature have been overturned by this new tool.

Claudia Jaguaribe wants to awaken our awareness of the uncertain future of the world and our environments. This is achieved through her significant interest in gardens, which she sees as the ideal link between human and Nature. They are cyclical spaces where we can easily mirror the cycle of life and our changing society. She frequently imagines compositions where the ruins of a world on the brink of collapse mingle with a future filled with nature that finds the strength to resist.

As a visual artist, her projects go beyond traditional photography. She offers invitations to dialogue and meditation. These invitations to dialogue can be seen in the projects related to her own Brazilian culture, which is an important part of her practice. She transmits this heritage and its history through her work, historicizing her photography.
